43 FACTORY COFFEE ROASTER
Tương lai cà phê Việt Nam: Cách 43 Factory Đốt Sáng Tạo và Khát Vọng - Vietnam’s Coffee Future: How 43 Factory Roasts Transparency and Aspiration
85 Design

In Vietnam’s coffee powerhouse, a 2018 factory-model café challenges industry norms by transforming production into an immersive experience. Designed by 85 Design to showcase the "Bean to Cup" journey from raw bean selection to final extraction, this bar redefines consumer engagement with Vietnamese coffee—a sector where most retail offerings lack quality and educational depth despite Vietnam’s global leadership in production and export.
Vietnam produces over a third of the world’s coffee yet faces a critical gap between its agricultural dominance and meaningful consumer experiences. Most retail coffee in the country remains unconnected to its origins, with quality often compromised by opaque supply chains. 43 Factory Coffee Roaster directly addresses this disconnect through an architectural intervention that makes the entire production process visible and tangible for customers.
The space operates as a meticulously designed "factory-model" environment where every stage—from bean selection, precise roasting at calibrated temperatures, grinding, to final extraction—occurs within unobstructed sightlines. This transparency is achieved through extensive use of glass facades that frame the entire workflow. Visitors witness baristas executing complex techniques in real time, transforming raw beans into finished cups without physical barriers. The design intentionally avoids traditional café compartmentalization, instead creating a single, fluid narrative where customers become active participants in understanding coffee’s journey.
Two distinct yet interconnected symbolic elements anchor this experiential approach. First, the building’s bird’s wing-shaped roof expresses an investor’s aspiration for Vietnamese coffee to achieve international prominence—a metaphorical "flight" toward global recognition. Second, a central green area features a structural form resembling coffee beans growing vertically through grouting, symbolizing emerging talent within the industry. This vertical element serves as both a visual focal point and functional hub, with the bar arranged around it to direct attention toward skilled baristas performing intricate preparations.
The project’s climatic strategy is equally intentional. Situated on a large lake, the building leverages water surface reflection for passive cooling, mitigating internal heat while enhancing sensory comfort. This dual function—thermal regulation and visual integration—creates an environment where natural elements actively support customer experience without mechanical intervention. A minimalist bridge network connects the lake-facing seating areas to interior spaces, ensuring seamless movement while maintaining the site’s aquatic context.
The second floor further extends this educational mission through dedicated private training zones. Here, customers can learn about Vietnamese coffee traditions and global variations in a controlled setting, fostering deeper appreciation and skill development. This space directly responds to the source material’s emphasis on knowledge exchange within the industry, positioning 43 Factory as both a retail destination and an active community hub for coffee education.
Critically, the design avoids romanticizing production while emphasizing its technical complexity. By showcasing the precise temperature control during roasting and the meticulous grinding process visible through glass walls, the space transforms abstract concepts of quality into concrete, observable actions. This approach directly confronts the source’s observation that most Vietnamese coffee lacks meaningful consumer engagement—making the "Bean to Cup" journey a physical experience rather than an afterthought.
The project’s spatial logic prioritizes narrative flow over aesthetic decoration. The central green area with its bean-grouting structure acts as a natural visual anchor, drawing attention toward the bar where skilled preparation occurs. This deliberate focus ensures customers engage with both the process and the people executing it—aligning perfectly with 85 Design’s goal of increasing value perception through transparency.
The lake integration extends beyond cooling; it becomes an active participant in the spatial dialogue. Water reflections soften architectural edges while the bridge system creates a low-impact connection between interior and exterior realms, reinforcing the project’s commitment to minimal intervention. This strategy reflects Vietnam’s agricultural identity without sacrificing modern functionality—a balance that supports both climatic needs and cultural context.
Ultimately, 43 Factory Coffee Roaster redefines what it means for Vietnamese coffee to be experienced globally. By making production visible, educational, and environmentally responsive, it transforms a simple café into an active node in the industry’s value chain. The space doesn’t just sell coffee—it demonstrates.
