Hẻm phố Sài Gòn được tái định nghĩa - The Saigon Alleyway Reimagined
atelier tho.A

Dự án chứng minh cách can thiệp kiến trúc có thể tôn vinh bối cảnh văn hóa đồng thời giải quyết thách thức thực tiễn.
In Vietnam’s bustling urban landscape, a novel architectural approach transforms constrained alley spaces into vibrant social hubs through modular design and adaptive circulation. This solution reinterprets Saigon’s historic 'hẻm' pathways as functional units that balance intimate dining with communal flow, creating resilient community spaces within dense city environments.
atelier tho.A’s 2017 intervention in Vietnam responds directly to the cultural significance of Saigon alleyways—known locally as 'hẻm'. By structuring six distinct units across 500m² of land, the design deliberately echoes these narrow, winding streets while redefining their purpose for contemporary use. Each unit functions simultaneously as a standalone shop and residence, mirroring how traditional hẻm spaces accommodate both commercial activity and domestic life within tight urban constraints.
The Modular Alleyway Framework
The project’s spatial strategy hinges on replicating Saigon’s alleyway geometry without sacrificing flexibility. Units are arranged along a central axis that mimics the narrow, zigzagging paths typical of hẻm structures, yet each segment operates independently—like small-scale shops with private entrances and internal courtyards. This configuration allows for varied activities: one unit houses the bakery, another serves as a casual dining space, while others accommodate kitchen operations or residential quarters. Crucially, the layout intentionally leaves gaps between units that function not as dead ends but as dynamic circulation zones. These "wandering" spaces become temporary seating areas during peak hours, enabling spontaneous social interactions without requiring additional infrastructure.
The design’s intelligence lies in its response to Saigon’s unique urban rhythm. Traditional hẻm spaces often face challenges with poor ventilation and limited natural light due to their narrow dimensions, yet atelier tho.A addresses this through strategic unit placement. By orienting units toward prevailing breezes during the humid tropical seasons, the architecture minimizes heat gain while maximizing cross-ventilation. This passive climate control strategy avoids mechanical systems entirely, aligning with Vietnam’s high temperatures and humidity levels without compromising comfort.
Dynamic Circulation and Color Response
The project’s color scheme acts as both visual anchor and functional tool, directly influencing guest experience within Saigon’s vibrant cultural context. Contrasting hues—such as deep blues for kitchen areas and warm terracotta for dining zones—are deliberately placed to create visual interest without overwhelming the space. This contrast serves a dual purpose: it enhances wayfinding by highlighting key circulation paths while simultaneously signaling different functional zones to guests navigating the complex layout.
Circulation within the space is further optimized through its relationship with climate. During rainy seasons common in Vietnam, water runoff from adjacent streets naturally channels into the "wandering" gaps between units—areas designed to temporarily hold moisture without causing damage. This natural drainage system prevents flooding while maintaining the flow of pedestrian movement. The layout also accommodates seasonal shifts: in cooler months, these gaps can be used for seating during evening gatherings, whereas in peak heat, they function as shaded pathways that reduce direct sun exposure. Such adaptability ensures the space remains functional year-round without requiring structural modifications.
The project’s material choices further reinforce its connection to Saigon’s environment. Local materials like weathered concrete and reclaimed wood are integrated into unit facades to reflect regional craftsmanship while resisting humidity-induced degradation. These elements contrast with the smooth, reflective surfaces of modern glass used in circulation zones—a deliberate choice that balances tradition with contemporary needs.
This approach demonstrates how architectural interventions can honor cultural context while solving practical challenges. By treating alleyways not as obstacles but as active components of urban life, atelier tho.A’s design offers a scalable model for dense cities seeking to integrate community spaces within constrained environments. The result is a space that feels both familiar and innovative—a true reflection of Saigon’s spirit through architectural language.
