Nằm trong khu đô thị sôi động quận 1, Ho Chi Minh City, Lai Restaurant là điểm nhấn kiến trúc độc đáo do LW Design Group thiết kế năm 2018.
Nơi giao thoa giữa văn hóa ẩm thực Quảng Đông và tinh hoa kiến trúc Việt hiện đại được Lai Restaurant thể hiện qua từng chi tiết nhỏ. Không gian này không chỉ là nơi phục vụ món ăn cao cấp mà còn là một bức tranh sống động về quá trình chế biến truyền thống, nơi những vật liệu chức năng trở thành biểu tượng văn hóa.
Nhà bếp là bảo tàng sống của nghệ thuật truyền thống
Nhà bếp chính là trung tâm hoạt động và cũng là "bảo tàng" minh họa kỹ thuật chế biến ẩm thực Quảng Đông. Cây gỗ được xếp gọn gàng bên cạnh những chiếc bình gốm xanh có họa tiết, vừa là nguyên liệu thiết yếu cho lò nướng vịt quay Bắc Kinh, vừa đóng vai trò thẩm mỹ trong không gian hoạt động. Các dụng cụ như thùng hấp bột mì tre và những đồng xu cổ tạo nên sự tương phản thú vị giữa chức năng thực tiễn và biểu tượng lịch sử. Hệ thống này cho phép đầu bếp chế biến menu cao cấp mà vẫn duy trì mối liên hệ trực tiếp với các phương pháp truyền thống, biến quá trình nấu nướng thành một tác phẩm nghệ thuật.
Thiết kế không gian tối ưu hóa trải nghiệm đa dạng
Bố cục không gian được sắp xếp thông minh xung quanh khu vực bếp, nơi những tấm màn gỗ đen có thể mở rộng hoặc thu hẹp để điều chỉnh mức độ riêng tư. Hệ thống ghế bọc da màu be và sofa hai chỗ kết hợp với vải thêu xanh nhẹ nhàng tạo nên sự tương phản tinh tế so với không gian ăn uống hiện đại. Hệ thống chiếu sáng sử dụng đèn treo mang phong cách đèn lồng truyền thống giúp khu vực hành lang ấm áp, hướng dẫn khách di chuyển tự nhiên trong không gian. Đặc biệt, ban công trên mái cao cung cấp góc nhìn tuyệt đẹp về thành phố qua khung cảnh được thiết kế tinh xảo, kết hợp với ánh sáng thành phố rực rỡ tạo nên trải nghiệm độc đáo.
Phòng ăn riêng tư được trang bị tường gỗ sơn mài xanh, bàn tròn lớn và ghế da màu be cùng gỗ tối. Chi tiết treo lồng đèn truyền thống được tích hợp vào trần nhà và tường, kết hợp với chiếc đèn lớn hiện đại treo ở trên mỗi bàn tạo nên hiệu ứng ánh sáng tinh tế. Vật liệu đá mài đã qua thời gian còn giúp không gian này giữ vững bản sắc văn hóa của Lai Restaurant.
Hệ thống di chuyển từ tầng một lên tầng hai được thiết kế bằng cầu thang gỗ với vách ngăn có kết cấu như rừng tre, tạo hiệu ứng thị giác đặc biệt. Chi tiết này không chỉ đảm bảo chức năng mà còn là điểm nhấn nghệ thuật thể hiện sự hòa quyện giữa tự nhiên và kiến trúc hiện đại. Các khu vực vệ sinh cũng được trau chuốt kỹ lưỡng với gạch men lấy cảm hứng từ các mẫu gốm cổ, kết hợp cùng tủ gỗ sơn mài truyền thống làm vừa thực dụng vừa giữ nguyên văn hóa.

Elements Management Group’s collaboration with LW Design Group has created Lai, an upscale Chinese dining experience in Ho Chi Minh City’s District One. Opening in 2018, this restaurant integrates traditional Cantonese kitchen theatrics and Chinese design heritage through meticulous material choices and spatial choreography, offering patrons both intimate dining spaces and panoramic city views from its rooftop terrace.
Lai Restaurant emerges as a sophisticated dialogue between Vietnamese urban context and Chinese culinary tradition. Situated within Ho Chi Minh City’s dynamic District One landscape, the space deliberately leverages its elevated position to frame the cityscape through a series of carefully calibrated architectural interventions.
The Kitchen as Living Museum of Tradition
The restaurant’s working kitchen functions as an immersive exhibit of Chinese culinary craftsmanship. Piles of timber, meticulously arranged alongside ornamental blue ceramic vases, serve dual purposes: they provide essential materials for the specialised Peking duck oven and act as visual anchors within the operational space. Bamboo dim sum steamers and a mosaic of old Chinese coins further enrich this environment, creating a dynamic interplay between utilitarian function and historical symbolism. This intentional display allows chefs to prepare the upscale menu while maintaining an unbroken connection to traditional practices.
Stone, brickwork, and lattice structures permeate the interior throughout, forming a cohesive material language derived directly from Chinese architectural traditions. This deliberate selection of textures creates a grounded yet refined atmosphere that contrasts effectively with the restaurant’s modern dining areas. The colour palette—drawn specifically from these architectural features—ensures visual harmony while maintaining distinct cultural references.
Spatial Choreography for Intimate Dining and Urban Views
The dining area is strategically organized around the central kitchen, with black traditional screens acting as versatile partitions that can be opened or closed to regulate privacy levels. This flexible system allows patrons to transition seamlessly between communal and private settings while maintaining visual continuity with the restaurant’s core functions.
Lighting design plays a critical role in establishing Lai’s atmosphere. Both standing and hanging lamps, evocative of traditional Chinese lanterns, create ambient illumination that enhances the dining experience without overwhelming it. Along the corridor, these lantern-style fixtures generate a warm, inviting glow that guides patrons through the space while reinforcing cultural motifs.
Private dining rooms represent Lai’s commitment to accommodating diverse social needs within its spatial framework. These intimate spaces feature blue lacquered wood panel walls, large round tables encircled by contemporary pale grey leather and dark wood chairs. Traditional backlit trellis details are integrated into the walls and ceilings, creating a sophisticated lighting effect completed by an oversized modern lantern suspended above each table.
The restaurant’s circulation system demonstrates thoughtful integration with both cultural context and urban environment. A wooden staircase connects the two levels, its railing designed using a paint effect and varying vertical widths to replicate a bamboo forest—a mesmerising optical feature described by LW Design Group’s Adrian Battisby as “a deliberate interpretation of natural patterns.” This design choice not only serves functional purposes but also creates an engaging visual experience that contrasts with the restaurant’s otherwise minimalist aesthetic.
Lai’s washrooms showcase exceptional attention to detail, featuring custom-made tiles inspired by historic ceramic prints. Chinese-style lacquer chests with large clasps function as both practical stands for washbasins and decorative elements that reinforce cultural continuity.
The tea tasting station provides another opportunity to engage with tradition through contemporary practice. Earthenware teapots on display here serve dual purposes: they allow guests to sample fine teas while also functioning as decorative elements that complement the room’s aesthetic.
Lai ultimately succeeds in creating a space where Chinese culinary heritage is not merely referenced but actively experienced through material choices and spatial relationships. The restaurant demonstrates how deep respect for tradition can coexist with modern design sensibilities, resulting in an environment that transports diners to a different time and place without sacrificing contemporary relevance or functional efficiency.
