MISTER LAI KITCHEN - SOUP
Tái định nghĩa chiến lược ngôn ngữ không gian Trung Quốc trong khu đô thị trung tâm TP.HCM - The Strategic Reinterpretation of Chinese Spatial Language in Ho Chi Minh City's Urban Core
BSA Design & Build Firm

BSA Design & Build Firm’s 2019 restaurant project in HCMC’s District 1 demonstrates how traditional Chinese architectural principles can be reconfigured for contemporary urban settings without compromising cultural authenticity or climatic responsiveness.
The Mister Lai Kitchen - Soup project exemplifies a deliberate architectural strategy where classical Chinese spatial language is translated into a modern context through meticulous material selection and circulation design. BSA’s approach avoids direct replication of historical forms while embedding essential cultural markers—arched gateways, patterned tiled floors, and wood-based furniture—that resonate with ancient Vietnamese-Chinese trade routes without imposing rigid historical constraints.
Traditional Elements Reimagined for Modern Context
The arched gates and windows described in the project serve as critical spatial mediators rather than decorative features. These elements create deliberate light modulation zones that shift throughout the day, transforming natural illumination from soft diffused glows during morning hours to sharper shadows by afternoon. This dynamic interplay avoids the typical problem of direct sunlight exposure common in HCMC’s tropical climate while maintaining visual continuity with traditional Chinese courtyard layouts. The tiled floors—adorned with intricate patterns and symbols—are not merely aesthetic choices but functional elements that channel foot traffic flow toward central gathering areas without disrupting the space’s intimate scale.
The color palette of black, brown, and orange functions as both cultural anchor and environmental response. These earthy tones absorb ambient heat during HCMC’s humid afternoons while reflecting cooler light at dawn—behaviorally aligned with traditional Chinese principles of thermal regulation through material choice. The wood tables and chairs further reinforce this strategy by utilizing natural materials that retain moisture better than synthetic alternatives, reducing the need for frequent maintenance in high-moisture environments.
Material Palette and Circulation in Tropical Climate
BSA’s material selection directly addresses HCMC’s tropical climate through strategic thermal management. The use of wood for seating surfaces—specifically chosen from locally sourced species—creates microclimates that mitigate humidity buildup while maintaining structural integrity against seasonal fluctuations. This approach contrasts with conventional restaurant designs that rely on heavy metal or plastic finishes, which often exacerbate heat retention in dense urban settings.
Circulation within the 1017 m² space is meticulously engineered to minimize thermal exposure while preserving visual flow. Narrow pathways between seating areas are lined with textured concrete that absorbs excess heat without creating reflective surfaces, preventing glare and maintaining consistent temperature gradients across different zones. This design ensures that high-traffic areas remain comfortable during HCMC’s intense midday sun without requiring extensive mechanical ventilation—a critical consideration for sustainable operations in a city where energy costs can exceed 30% of restaurant budgets.
The project’s lighting strategy further enhances its climatic responsiveness through ambient illumination rather than artificial overhead fixtures. Soft, diffused light sources positioned along architectural features like arched gateways create layered visual effects that reduce heat gain from direct sunlight while maintaining a warm, inviting atmosphere. This approach aligns with traditional Chinese principles of “light as conversation” but adapts it to modern HCMC conditions where excessive lighting often increases energy consumption by 25–40%.
The spatial arrangement also addresses HCMC’s unique microclimate challenges through strategic placement. By positioning seating clusters away from direct solar exposure near the building’s eastern facade, BSA ensures that high-traffic zones remain cooler during peak heat periods without sacrificing views of the street.
The project demonstrates how cultural elements can be integrated into contemporary design without becoming historical artifacts.
The restaurant’s success lies in its ability to transform cultural symbolism into practical solutions. Every element—from the arched gateways to the earthy color palette—serves multiple purposes: it creates thermal comfort, manages light exposure, and maintains a sense of historical continuity without overwhelming modern usage patterns.
