O2 COFFEE - THE NEW RƯỜNG
Quán cà phê Hue kết tinh truyền thống và tương lai - Hue's Coffee Shop Weaves Tradition and Tomorrow
MW archstudio

MW archstudio’s O2 Coffee in Hue, Vietnam (2019), occupies a 120m² site adjacent to the UNESCO-listed Dai Noi Imperial Citadel. This coffee shop reimagines traditional Vietnamese "Rường" architecture not as relic but as responsive climate strategy for modern urban life, balancing cultural heritage with sustainable commercial function within the city’s historically significant residential context.
Hue’s O2 Coffee project confronts a critical tension in Vietnam’s rapidly evolving urban landscape: preserving culturally resonant architectural forms while meeting contemporary needs. Situated on 120m² land between a road and a large lake near the Dai Noi Imperial Citadel—a UNESCO World Heritage site—the coffee shop directly engages with the city’s complex cultural identity. This location, within a residential area steeped in Vietnam’s 19th- to 20th-century feudal heritage, demands an architectural response that honors historical continuity without sacrificing functional viability.
Cultural Continuity as Climate Strategy
The design team deliberately reactivates the "Rường" house typology—a traditional Vietnamese structure adapted for Hue’s harsh monsoon climate—by integrating its core principles into a modern commercial space. Historically, these roofs managed intense summer heat and seasonal rains through strategic sloping and ventilation pathways. Yet, as the source notes, material constraints, shifting social needs, and rapid development have caused this architectural form to fade from practical use. O2 Coffee avoids treating "Rường" as mere nostalgia; instead, it translates its climatic intelligence into a living system for today’s coffee shop. The building’s straight steel column system and sloping roof tiles create visual continuity with the past while enabling precise control over light and airflow. This approach directly addresses Hue’s tropical monsoon climate—characterized by high summer temperatures and prolonged rainy seasons—by maintaining passive cooling without mechanical intervention.
The project’s strategic voids around its primary facades exemplify this dual focus on heritage and function. By deliberately reducing solid mass relative to external space, the coffee shop creates natural ventilation channels through sliding glass doors positioned vertically along walls. This configuration allows users to observe seasonal shifts in the surrounding landscape while minimizing thermal gain. Crucially, the design avoids violating setback regulations by expanding the urban buffer zone—adding trees to form a protective corridor that shields large glass facades from direct sunlight. This buffer not only mitigates greenhouse effects but also enhances community cohesion through shared visual experiences.
Adaptive Systems for Urban Resilience
O2 Coffee’s material choices and spatial circulation reflect a deep understanding of Vietnam’s construction challenges while prioritizing long-term viability. The use of GACHMAT panels—recycled industrial waste—and unburnt bricks demonstrates how locally sourced, sustainable materials can achieve structural integrity without compromising the project’s cultural authenticity. This approach directly counters common industry pitfalls in Vietnamese commercial buildings: inadequate investment, excessive floor density, and poor material selection that often compromise safety and user experience.
The coffee shop’s circulation strategy further enhances its environmental performance. By designing the interior as a "transparent hollow block," it maximizes natural light penetration even during overcast conditions—eliminating daytime lighting needs while reducing energy consumption at night through targeted LED use. The sliding glass doors, arranged in multiple directions to optimize airflow, work synergistically with the buffer corridor system to dissipate heat efficiently. This passive cooling mechanism reduces reliance on mechanical air conditioning, which operates only when necessary based on real-time weather data and internal temperature thresholds.
Critically, O2 Coffee’s design anticipates future adaptability without expanding.
