Sự đối xứng trục và dòng cảm giác tại không gian cà phê Việt Nam của Chon.a - Axial Symmetry and Sensory Flow at Chon.a’s Vietnam Coffee Space

Chon.a

Chon.a’s 2019 coffee shop in Vietnam reimagines traditional Vietnamese architecture through precise axial symmetry.

The SEN SPA project establishes its architectural identity through a meticulously calibrated axial system that transforms the coffee shop into an experiential narrative. Chon.a’s approach begins with the replication of traditional Vietnamese patios extending continuously from the lobby through functional corridors and treatment rooms, creating a seamless transition between public and private spaces. This spatial continuity is reinforced by each floor’s axial see-through shape—defined by symmetrical arch door rhythms—that acts as both visual anchor and kinetic pathway.

Axial Symmetry as Sensory Catalyst

The axial see-through shapes function as dynamic conduits for environmental interaction rather than static divisions. Each floor’s symmetrical arch door rhythms establish a rhythmic pulse that guides users along a predetermined path while maintaining visual connection to the central skylight zone. This deliberate spatial sequencing ensures continuous engagement with light and shadow—shifting from soft diffused illumination in the lobby to deeper, more focused lighting in treatment areas—as movement progresses through the building.

Material selection further amplifies this sensory journey. The use of weathered stone and reclaimed timber throughout the lobby and corridors echoes traditional Vietnamese construction techniques, providing tactile richness that contrasts with the smooth surfaces of modern glass elements in the see-through zones. These materials interact dynamically with natural light during different times of day—stone absorbing heat while timber reflects ambient warmth—creating a thermal gradient that influences user comfort without mechanical intervention.

Water-Integrated Circulation Systems

At the project’s core lies a dual-purpose water feature: the lake positioned directly beneath the central skylight zone, serving as both a visual focal point and functional element for therapeutic circulation. This integration is not merely aesthetic but strategically designed to enhance sensory pathways within the coffee shop experience. The lake’s reflective surface acts as a dynamic mirror for natural light entering through the skylights above, creating shifting patterns that evolve with time of day and weather conditions.

The lake’s position below the skylight center creates a unique thermal buffer for the coffee shop space. During Vietnam’s hot and humid summers, the water absorbs excess heat from the surrounding air, reducing localized temperatures within the central zones by up to 3°C without mechanical systems. Conversely, in cooler seasons, the lake releases stored thermal energy through evaporation, helping maintain consistent microclimates across multiple floors.

The circulation path from entrance to spa treatment rooms is deliberately engineered around this water element. Users enter through the traditional patio sequence and move along the symmetrical arches toward the central skylight area, where they encounter the lake before progressing into private treatment spaces. This progression ensures that the water feature becomes an active participant in the user’s sensory experience rather than a passive backdrop—its reflective surface interacts with light to create visual depth while its thermal properties influence movement comfort.

The design also addresses Vietnam’s specific climatic challenges through strategic material choices. Local stone foundations minimize heat absorption during daytime, while timber arches allow for better ventilation than solid concrete alternatives. This combination reduces moisture buildup in the treatment areas without compromising structural integrity—a critical consideration given the project’s location near coastal regions where humidity levels frequently exceed 70%.

This integrated approach demonstrates how Chon.a leverages Vietnam’s environmental conditions to create spaces that respond organically to user needs.
