HAUS SPACE’s 2017 renovation of Lagi’s existing restaurant demonstrates how constrained resources can catalyze thoughtful architectural transitions.
Lagi’s central Vietnamese coastal town presents a unique challenge for HAUS SPACE: transforming an existing restaurant into a contemporary coffee space within tight budgetary limits while maintaining uninterrupted business operations. The site’s diverse tropical terrain—mountains, forests, rivers, and sandy beaches—demands a design that respects both the immediate environment and the client’s phased renovation timeline.
Material Strategy for Cost-Conscious Phasing
The project’s material choices directly address Lagi’s economic constraints while maintaining visual continuity with the site’s natural rhythms. HAUS SPACE opted for a lightweight steel roof structure to minimize costs without sacrificing essential light penetration—a critical factor in tropical climates where natural illumination reduces reliance on artificial lighting. This decision aligns with the region’s practical needs, as steel offers durability and thermal efficiency compared to traditional materials that might require excessive energy input during Vietnam’s hot summers.
The neutral color palette—inspired by nearby riverbed rocks and dam structures—further supports the project’s phased approach. By avoiding high-contrast finishes, HAUS SPACE prevents visual disruption during renovation stages while allowing wood elements to emerge organically through intermittent placements across walls and floors. This restrained application of materials ensures that each phase of construction reveals new textures without overwhelming the existing brick-cement structure.
Spatial Harmony in Tropical Conditions
HAUS SPACE’s spatial strategy emphasizes intimate yet functional connections to Lagi’s natural environment through carefully calibrated circulation and enclosure systems. The open-plan layout intentionally avoids creating rigid barriers that would isolate guests from the surrounding landscape, instead using strategic vegetation and subtle architectural elements to frame views of rivers and mountains.
The project’s circulation patterns prioritize user comfort while accommodating the phased renovation process. By positioning key functional zones—such as seating areas and service counters—along natural sightlines toward the river, HAUS SPACE ensures guests maintain unobstructed views of the landscape even as construction progresses in adjacent sections. This spatial arrangement also minimizes disruption to daily operations during renovation phases; for instance, temporary partitions can be reconfigured without altering the fundamental relationship between interior spaces and external environments.
The roof’s design serves dual purposes: it provides essential natural light while maintaining thermal efficiency through strategic ventilation gaps. These gaps allow breezes from Lagi’s coastal terrain to circulate within the space without causing excessive moisture buildup—a critical adaptation for tropical climates where humidity levels often exceed 70%. By avoiding complex glazing systems or heavy insulation, HAUS SPACE achieved cost-effective climate control that aligns with the project’s phased approach.
HAUS SPACE deliberately avoided creating enclosed spaces that would sever guests from nature during renovation stages. Instead, the design incorporates open pathways leading toward the river and mountains, ensuring that even temporary construction activities do not isolate users from their surroundings. This spatial strategy directly addresses Lagi’s tropical conditions by reducing reliance on artificial cooling while maintaining guest comfort through natural light and airflow.
The project’s success lies in its ability to balance immediate operational needs with long-term ecological integration. By using the existing brick-cement structure as a foundation for new interventions, HAUS SPACE created a space that evolves alongside the client’s business growth while preserving Lagi’s natural character.
